Business Planning on a Picnic Blanket: Summer Reflections for an Autumn Boost

The legs of a young woman on the grassI love lying on a picnic blanket, feeling the sun on my skin and reflecting on life in general. Are you much of a reflector? Do you take time to review your business performance or was January 1st the last time you thought about your business goals for the year?

Why should you bother to reflect on your business performance?

I find business owners fall into 2 camps…those that regularly review their performance and know every number, and those that don’t. Which are you?

Do you know if you’re off track compared to where you had wanted to be, considering we are nearly 8 months through the year?

I bet you aren’t where you wanted to be and that you don’t have an accurate plan of how you are going to close the gap (by this I mean one that’s written down into the tasks you need to complete to achieve the goal. Not one that exists only in your head!). Am I right?

By reflecting on your business performance you can work out what activity you need to take to get on track and stay on track. If you don’t reflect it’s highly likely you will miss your targets for the year, and that’s no fun!

So what exactly do you need to review?

You need to work out the gap from where you are now to where you want to be.

That could be a number of clients, an amount of retained income per month, or any measure that’s right for you and your business.

Once you know that you need to work out the detailed actions you need to take to close that gap.

Then stick them in your diary and make sure you do them!

Why do this now and not in December?

There’s 2 good reasons to do this now…

1) It’s too late by December as you will have well and truly missed the boat!

2) September to mid-November is a prime business growth time. People come back from holiday with a renewed passion for life and business so you want to be ready to capitalise on that as soon as the schools go back. Miss that boom time and you will probably miss your targets.

The reality

Getting focused now could result in some great wins for you and your business. Carry on without that focus and it’s highly unlikely you’ll hit your goals for the year.

Missing your goals usually has a negative effect on how you feel.

If your goals are important enough to you, you will make the time to get those business growth tasks done.

If your goals aren’t important enough to you then examine why that is. It might be time to give yourself a good talking to!

The growth is there for the taking. You just need to decide to take it.

What 3 things can you do differently to grow your business in the Autumn?
