So you’ve set goals in the past and then not hit them? You are certainly not alone.
In business life it can be pretty painful when it happens though.
Have you found yourself setting a big goal on the 1st January to grow your business by X% and then achieved something that was a lot less than the desired X%?
Has this dented your desire to set goals because rather than acting as a motivator they have become a demotivator as you feel like a failure for not hitting them?
Maybe you’ve been unsure as to the level of goal you should be setting because you want it to be achievable and you simply don’t know what level of growth is achievable?
Why does that happen?
In the vast majority of cases, the reason the goal wasn’t achieved will not have been because it was the wrong goal. It will be because not enough action was taken to achieve it, or, the wrong action was taken.
Think about it for a minute, what goal did you miss? Did you go “all out” to achieve it?
A true story
I talk to many business owners who want to grow their business. As part of that discussion I ask them about the level of growth they want to achieve and what they have tried in the past.
During one of these conversations it came up that the business owner enjoyed sport and was training for a specific event. I reflected the conversation back to him and asked why he was more committed to achieving the sporting goal than the business goal (especially when you consider their livelihood and that of their family was relying on their business).
They were a bit taken aback and asked why I had asked the question. The answer was easy…they had been far more animated about their training programme and hitting that goal than their business goal.
The reason they weren’t getting the progress in their business was because they weren’t applying the same rigorous training schedule to their business goal.
It’s time to stop thinking and start acting!
This story happens over and over again. Is it happening in your business right now?
Are you following a clearly defined training schedule to grow business just like you would if you wanted to go from “couch to 10km” in running?
Just so you know…having the business training schedule in your head doesn’t count! It needs to be clearly defined in print, have short term and longer term milestones, weekly and monthly progress checks, and everything else you would expect.
It’s easier than you think
Everything starts with a positive intention to change.
Next comes the defined steps to achieve the change.
Then all you have to do is follow them!
Some people are great doing this on their own and some people do better with support; just like some people are happy running on their own and some join a running club or have a personal trainer. Which are you?
Do you need some support?
Do you struggle to know what your business training schedule should look like?
Would you do better if you had more support around you? Do you need the equivalent of the business running club or business personal trainer?
I’m launching a 2nd Business Running Club which will provide the structure, knowledge, tools and accountability to grow your business. I only accept 4 people in to each one and I have 2 spaces left in one that will launch in the next 4 weeks. Interested?
